A Croak Given

"In the Legion a name given is a croak given, and a croak given is a life pledged."

Blunk
Deep marsh. Nobody out there has asked this one anything. One name, one syllable. A spear.
Deserted once, came back, and nobody has decided what to do about it.

The native pool is small on purpose. Frogs collide, and that is why they need epithets.
No human has ever said a name where this frog could hear it. Borrowed shapes belong to the frontier.
Given name: Blunk
3 · Mud-Name — earned, and often the only thing anyone calls them
4 · Stone-Name — eight words of Mithric, all of them misheard
Only the Legion has stone-words. Eight of them, and no bullywug outside the Gilded Croak has any claim to one.

The Four Registers

  • Marsh-Native. Short, hard, wet. The oldest layer, and the whole rank and file of any tribe. A frog with only this name has met nobody worth borrowing from.
  • Mud-Name. An earned epithet, and often the only thing anyone calls them. A quality and a body-part, or a mark and a body-part.
  • Borrowed-Shape. A human name heard on the frontier and chewed until it fits a bullywug mouth. It means contact — or the ambition to look like someone who has had it.
  • Stone-Name. A word of the old empire, learned by ear from a human reading a marker aloud. Only the Legion has them, there are eight, and the Legion is certain it knows what they mean.

A bullywug carries one to four of these, in that order, and the stack is a biography. Spawn carry none: a name is given, not grown.
